NvHIMA Winona Barry Memorial Scholarship

Directions:

This scholarship is available to applicants that meet the following criteria:

  1. Must have a current membership with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and Nevada Health Information Management Association (NvHIMA).
  2. Must be enrolled in a CAHIIM accredited HIM program
  3. Must be a resident of Nevada
  4. Must provide a college transcript to document a GPA of 3.0 or better; OR documentation of Pass for programs that only use Pass/Fail system.

Applications may be submitted beginning September 1st through December 31st at 11:59 pm. Late submissions will not be considered.

  1. Students must email completed applications and all requested documentation by the deadline to director.nvhima@gmail.com
  2. An essay must be submitted which meets the following criteria:
    1. Two to three pages, typed, double spaced, grammatically correct and free of typographical errors.
    2. Complete answers to all essay questions included on the application.
  3. Applications will be evaluated on the overall presentation of the application and on the answers to the following questions:
1. Describe why you chose HIM as a career.
2. Do you feel HIM professionals are responsible for giving back to the profession? In what ways should HIM professionals give back? In what ways do you plan to give back?
3. Describe an event in your life that gave you direction or changed your life’s direction.
4. How will the scholarship assist you with your education?

The Education Committee will notify the winner(s) via email by January 8th. The winner will be requested to attend the Business Meeting held during the Annual Meeting. If the recipient is unable to attend, they may make a short video of themselves reading their essay and introducing themselves that we may play at the Annual Meeting. The winner will also be asked to sign a release allowing NvHIMA to publicize their name and picture on the NvHIMA website.

The above information is true and accurate to the best of my knowledge. I understand that if I am awarded this scholarship/grant and fail to complete the HIM program of my choice within one calendar year of receipt of this award/scholarship, I will reimburse the Nevada Health Information Management Association the full amount of this award. I will provide proof of attendance on request.
